Nigeria is set to make history in the global public relations profession with the inauguration of the world’s first specialised University of Public Relations and Leadership (UPRL) and the hosting of the World Public Relations Forum (WPRF), two landmark events that the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) says will cement the country’s status as a global communication powerhouse.

The NIPR disclosed this on Thursday in a statement commemorating the 2026 World Public Relations Day, describing the forthcoming events as defining moments not only for Nigeria but also for the global public relations profession.

According to the President and Chairman of Council of NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku, the University of Public Relations and Leadership, scheduled for inauguration on November 20, 2026, will be the first institution in the world dedicated exclusively to the study of public relations and leadership.

He said the university, developed through a collaboration involving government, professional institutions and international strategic partners, is designed to train a new generation of strategic advisers, crisis managers and communication leaders capable of driving governance, business and national development.

The inauguration will coincide with the World Public Relations Forum, which Abuja will host from November 15 to 21, bringing together an estimated 3,000 delegates from 126 member countries of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management.

Expected participants include heads of state, communication executives, regulators, academics, policymakers and industry leaders from around the world.

Neliaku said Nigeria’s successful bid to host the forum reflects the country’s growing influence in international reputation management and strategic communication.

“Hosting the WPRF in this country affirms Nigeria’s ascension as a strategic voice in global reputation discourse. It implies that Nigeria is no longer merely a participant in the business of global reputation management, but has become a hub for communication excellence,” he stated.

Adding another milestone to the country’s achievements, the NIPR President announced that the institute would also commission what he described as the world’s largest national public relations secretariat during the same period.

He noted that the projects collectively represent Nigeria’s emergence as a leading force in the global communication ecosystem.

The institute also revealed that Africa’s professional communication bodies have adopted The Africa Declaration on the Professionalisation of Public Relations and Responsible Communication, a continental charter aimed at promoting ethical standards, professional accountability and responsible communication across Africa.

Neliaku said NIPR was among the founding signatories of the declaration, which recognises the Nigerian model of balancing professional independence with government support.

He added that the charter would be formally signed during the World Public Relations Forum in Abuja, making Nigeria the venue for the birth of a new continental framework for professional public relations practice.

Speaking on this year’s World Public Relations Day theme, “The Golden Age of Strategic PR,” Neliaku observed that public relations has evolved from a support function focused on media engagement into a strategic leadership discipline that shapes policy, influences corporate decisions and safeguards institutional credibility.

He described today’s public relations practitioners as boardroom strategists, reputation architects and trusted advisers whose expertise has become indispensable to effective governance and sustainable development.

“As the profession enters this golden age, NIPR remains resolute in equipping Nigerian practitioners with the strategic acumen, ethical grounding and relationship intelligence required to sit confidently at decision-making tables, both locally and globally. Public relations is no longer just a support function; it is now strategic development capital,” he said.

He urged practitioners to embrace the changing demands of the profession by providing ethical leadership, strategic counsel and trusted relationships that strengthen institutions and advance national development.

With the convergence of the World Public Relations Forum, the inauguration of the world’s first public relations university, the commissioning of a global-scale PR secretariat and the signing of Africa’s landmark professional charter, Nigeria is poised to become the focal point of the international communication community in November.
