BBNaija reality star Kiddwaya has sparked debate on social media after suggesting that Nigeria might have achieved greater development if British colonial rule had continued for another 10 to 15 years.

Kiddwaya made the remark in a post shared on X, where he reflected on the impact of British colonialism on Nigeria’s development.

According to the reality star, the country could have been “a lot more developed” if the British had remained in Nigeria for an additional decade or more before granting independence.

His comment has generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users agreeing with his position while others criticised the suggestion and described it as an endorsement of colonial rule.

Some supporters of the view pointed to infrastructure and urban planning in parts of cities such as Lagos and Ibadan that date back to the colonial era, arguing that a longer British presence could have resulted in further development.

However, critics maintained that colonialism came with exploitation and other negative consequences, arguing that Nigeria’s development should not be measured by the length of time it remained under foreign rule.

Kiddwaya’s comment has therefore reignited the long-running debate over the legacy of British colonialism and its influence on Nigeria’s political, economic and social development.
