China Launches Sustainable Aviation Fuel Program to Boost Green Transition
China inaugurated its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) program on Thursday, marking a significant step toward promoting a green and low-carbon future in its aviation sector.
The program commenced with 12 flights departing from Beijing Daxing, Chengdu Shuangliu, Zhengzhou Xinzheng, and Ningbo Lishe international airports, using SAF as part of the Civil Aviation Administration of China’s (CAAC) green initiative.
Major airlines including China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and Air China are participating in the project. SAF, made from renewable materials, is capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 80% over its life cycle compared to conventional jet fuel.
Han Jun, deputy head of the CAAC, underscored the importance of the initiative, noting that approximately 99% of carbon emissions in the civil aviation sector come from fuel consumption during flights.
The first phase of the program will run from September to December 2024, with an expansion planned for 2025 that will increase the number of participating airlines.
In recent years, China’s civil aviation industry has ramped up its efforts to reduce energy consumption and emissions. Currently, 27% of airport vehicles are powered by renewable energy, with some new airports achieving up to 80%. Additionally, most domestic flights and airport terminals have stopped using single-use, non-biodegradable plastic tableware.
