UN Secretary-General Condemns Deadly Terrorist Attack in Mali

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned a recent terrorist attack in Mali’s capital, Bamako, and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.

Speaking through UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres expressed his outrage following the attack, which left numerous people dead and prompted the temporary closure of the international airport. Islamic militants from JNIM, an Al-Qaeda-linked group, claimed responsibility for the violence, which targeted several locations, including a military police academy.

The Secretary-General urged the Malian transitional government to ensure that the perpetrators face justice, referring to the attack as “despicable.” He extended his condolences to the victims’ families, the government, and the people of Mali, and wished a swift recovery to the injured, including a UN guard.

While the UN’s peacekeeping mission in Mali, MINUSMA, ended in December 2023, more than 20 UN agencies remain in the country, providing support for development efforts.
