The Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) has released four South Sudanese soldiers who were detained in July at the border in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State, after nearly three months in custody.
The release follows successful negotiations between South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) chief Gen Santino Deng Wol and his Ugandan counterpart, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, during a meeting in Kampala this week.
SSPDF spokesperson Maj Gen Lul Ruai Koang confirmed in a press statement that the discussions secured the release of the soldiers, including Capt. Machol Majur Madol, who had been detained by the Uganda Revenue Authority for carrying a loaded firearm.
Both military leaders also agreed to prevent further encroachments by the UPDF into South Sudanese territory and emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to border issues.
The talks aimed to strengthen peace along the border and included plans for a joint high-level committee to address border demarcation.
The SSPDF also announced increased security along the Juba-Nimule Highway to protect civilians from recent ambushes, underscoring the commitment to regional stability and cooperation between the two nations.
