A 36-year-old man, identified as RA, has been arrested in Indonesia for allegedly selling his 11-month-old baby on Facebook without his wife’s knowledge to fund his online gambling addiction.
RA received 15 million Indonesian Rupiah (approximately £730), which he immediately used for gambling.
The incident came to light when RA’s wife returned to their home in Tangerang, West Jakarta, and found their baby missing.
Upon questioning, RA confessed to selling their child. She then reported the matter to the police.
Tangerang City Metro Police Chief Zain Dwi Nugroho stated that RA admitted to selling the baby to settle his debts but quickly gambled away the money.
Two buyers, identified as HK and MO, were also arrested on suspicion of involvement in a human trafficking network.
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission condemned the act, with its chief, Ai Maryati, highlighting the serious human rights violations involved in child trafficking.
The case follows recent police busts of baby trafficking rings in Depok, where children were being sold online for similar amounts.
Authorities are investigating RA, HK, and MO for further connections to larger trafficking networks.
