The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has penalized Libya and awarded Nigeria three points and a 3-0 victory after Libya failed to meet hosting obligations for their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board Chairperson, Ousmane Kanethe, announced the ruling on Saturday, confirming that Nigeria’s Super Eagles were left stranded at a non-operational airport, leading to the team walking away from the fixture.
The Libya Football Federation was also fined $50,000, payable within 60 days, as part of CAF’s commitment to maintaining fair play and discipline in the tournament.
CAF cited Libya for violating Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations, along with Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. The decision reads in part: “The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.”
As a result of the ruling, Nigeria’s points total rises to 10 from four games, solidifying their position in the qualifiers.
