Policymakers, economic experts, and stakeholders from across Africa have gathered in Gaborone, Botswana, for the 2024 African Economic Conference (AEC).
Themed “Securing Africa’s Economic Future Amidst Rising Uncertainty,” the event aims to tackle the continent’s pressing economic challenges and explore strategies for resilience in a complex global landscape.
The conference, which runs from Nov. 23 to Nov. 25, will feature discussions on key issues such as the effects of global uncertainty on Africa’s development, African-led solutions for economic resilience, innovative financing strategies, and leveraging technology for predictive insights. Emphasis will also be placed on the role of youth-driven innovation in strengthening resilience across sectors.
Co-hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the event is expected to produce actionable recommendations to guide African nations toward economic stability and prosperity.
Botswana’s President, Duma Boko, delivered a keynote address at the opening ceremony, underscoring the importance of collaborative solutions to Africa’s economic challenges.
Other notable speakers include Botswana’s Minister of International Relations, Dr. Phenyo Butale; UNDP Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director for Africa, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa; AfDB Chief Economist and Vice-President, Prof. Kevin Urama; and UNECA Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary, Mr. Claver Gatete.
A highlight of the conference is a research competition recognizing groundbreaking contributions from scholars across the continent.
Participants can join the conference either in person or virtually, broadening access to key discussions shaping Africa’s economic future.
