Nationwide Blackout Strikes Ethiopia Amid Power System Instability

Authorities work to restore electricity as country faces widespread outage.

Ethiopia was plunged into darkness late Saturday evening as a nationwide power outage disrupted electricity supply across the country. The blackout, which began around 6 p.m. local time, has been attributed to “system instability,” according to the Ethiopian Electric Power Authority (EEPA).

In a statement, the EEPA urged citizens to remain calm while restoration efforts are underway. “Our teams are working tirelessly to restore power to affected areas as quickly as possible,” the authority assured.

The incident follows a similar power outage on March 28, which lasted for five hours and left most regions in the country without electricity, except for Bahir Dar and surrounding areas in the Amhara region. Authorities have yet to disclose the cause of that previous blackout.

The recurrence of nationwide outages highlights ongoing challenges in Ethiopia’s electricity infrastructure, prompting calls for long-term solutions to ensure stability and reliability in the power supply.
