China, US Renew Landmark Science Agreement for Five Years

1 31

China and the United States have agreed to renew the U.S.-China Science and Technology Agreement for another five years, China’s Ministry of Science and Technology announced on Friday.

The agreement, initially set to expire on August 27, 2024, has been extended, continuing decades of bilateral scientific collaboration.

Signed in 1979 when diplomatic ties between Beijing and Washington were established, the pact has been a cornerstone of cooperation, fostering advancements in fields such as atmospheric science, agriculture, physics, and chemistry. It has also supported academic and commercial exchanges that have significantly impacted both nations.

Despite its success, the agreement has faced scrutiny in recent years amid U.S. concerns about intellectual property theft and the use of shared scientific achievements to bolster China’s military and technological capabilities. The Chinese foreign ministry has not commented on whether the renewal will contribute to stabilizing the often-tense Sino-U.S. relationship.

The renewal underscores the enduring importance of science diplomacy, even as geopolitical tensions persist between the two nations.
