The California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) has expressed interest in partnering with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) to foster collaborations in creative arts, climate change, green jobs, compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion, and technology sectors.
During a courtesy visit to NiDCOM Chairman, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja on Friday, CalSTA Secretary, Mr. Toks Omishakin, emphasized California’s commitment to addressing global environmental and economic challenges.
Omishakin highlighted California’s status as one of the world’s leading agencies in implementing impactful policies related to climate change. He noted that this partnership would mark a significant milestone, as California has rarely engaged with African nations in areas such as green jobs and environmental solutions.
“This visit is about establishing a California-Nigeria partnership focusing on climate change, green jobs, technology, creative arts, and CNG conversion,” Omishakin said.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s influence as Africa’s largest economy and praised its global contributions in music and film through industries like Nollywood and Afrobeats. Omishakin also underscored California’s leadership in creative industries, including Hollywood and global music award platforms like the Grammys, held in Los Angeles.
“Nigeria is the epicenter of Africa’s music and movie industries, and California mirrors this role in the United States. This shared strength presents a unique opportunity for collaboration,” he added.
In response, Dabiri-Erewa welcomed the CalSTA delegation, expressing pride in Omishakin’s accomplishments as a Nigerian-American. She commended the initiative and assured support for fostering stronger ties between California and Nigeria.
“We’re delighted to host you and explore business opportunities that can bolster Nigeria’s growth. California’s interest in Nigeria’s creative arts and green technologies is a testament to the potential of this partnership,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
She noted that the delegation would meet Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation and tour facilities, including a CNG conversion center and locally made products suitable for export to California.
Dabiri-Erewa also reaffirmed confidence in Nigeria’s economic future under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing the government’s commitment to achieving a trillion-dollar economy.
The CalSTA delegation included Professor Aditya Ramji from the University of California and Senior Advisor Mr. Giles Giovinazzi.
