Togo Appoints First Prime Minister Under New Constitution

Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe reappointed Victoire Tomegah-Dogbe as prime minister for a six-year term under the new constitution on Thursday, according to the president’s office.

This reappointment came months after Tomegah-Dogbe and her entire government resigned in March. Despite her resignation, Tomegah-Dogbe was tasked with managing current affairs until a new government team could be appointed.

Tomegah-Dogbe, the first woman to hold the prime minister position in Togo, was initially appointed in 2020. She has held several ministerial roles since 2008, including chief of staff of the president’s office.

The reappointment follows the National Assembly’s approval of a new constitution earlier this year, transitioning Togo from a presidential to a parliamentary system. Under the new constitution, the president is elected by parliament for a single six-year term, with executive power vested in the prime minister. The presidency role is now largely ceremonial.

Gnassingbe’s father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, ruled Togo for nearly four decades before Faure Gnassingbe succeeded him with military support.
