Nigerian Government Warns Against Travel to UK Amid Violence Risk

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Nigerians planning to travel to the United Kingdom (UK) to be cautious due to the heightened risk of violence.

In a statement released on Monday, Ministry spokesperson Amb. Eche Abu-Obe alerted citizens about the increased danger following recent riots triggered by the tragic killing of three young girls at a concert.

“The risk of violence and disorder has escalated, evidenced by attacks on law enforcement officers and infrastructure damage,” Abu-Obe stated. “Citizens are urged to exercise increased vigilance, avoid political events, rallies, protests, and large gatherings.”

Travelers are also advised to stay alert and maintain self-awareness at all times. For assistance, contact the Nigerian High Commission via email at hc@nigeriahc.org.uk or phone at +442078391244.

The spokesperson noted that recent large and occasionally unruly demonstrations by far-right and other extra-parliamentary groups have intensified, exacerbated by the deaths of the three girls.

“These incidents have fueled an anti-immigration narrative, particularly targeting Muslim immigrants and people of color,” Abu-Obe added. “This advisory is subject to ongoing review.”
