Congolese Envoy Urges International Community to Address Terrorism
Pascaline Gerengbo Yakivu, the Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Nigeria, has called on the international community to hold neighboring countries accountable for allegedly sponsoring terrorism in the DRC.
Speaking in Abuja during a weekend commemoration for genocide victims in Congo, Yakivu lamented the ongoing suffering of Congolese citizens. “Every day, peaceful citizens are forced to flee their homes, taking refuge in the bush, far from their natural environment, lacking everything, dying of hunger and diseases caused by their wandering situation.”
“These individuals have harmed no one; they suffer simply because they are Congolese. This occurs amid the indifference of other countries and the international community, despite their reputation as civilized nations.”
Yakivu accused neighboring countries’ armies, particularly Rwanda, of supporting terrorist groups such as M23. She claimed that for almost three decades, these foreign forces have occupied large territories in the DRC under false pretenses, committing atrocities, and exploiting the country’s natural resources.
Research conducted by Congolese state institutions and credible foreign organizations indicates that more than 10 million deaths have resulted from these foreign incursions and occupations. “Imagine what 10 million deaths represent. We have countries in Africa and other continents with populations that do not exceed 10 million,” Yakivu noted.
Reflecting on the DRC’s history of hospitality, Yakivu reminded the audience of the events in April 1994 when the DRC opened its borders to Rwandan refugees. She emphasized the urgent need for international intervention to restore peace and stability in the region.
“We are not dealing with a drama or an adventure; this is a harsh reality. People are suffering, people are dying. We urge the international community to join efforts and help our country regain its peace,” Yakivu appealed.
