Deadly Russian Airstrikes Hit Multiple Ukrainian Cities, Killing at Least 16
At least 16 people have been killed and more than 80 injured after a massive wave of Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on April 16, 2026, according to officials.
The assault involved nearly 700 drones along with dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles, marking one of the largest aerial barrages in recent weeks. Authorities say it was the biggest strike since a late-March attack that deployed 948 drones and 34 missiles within 24 hours.
The capital, Kyiv, was among the hardest hit, with at least four people killed overnight and more than 50 others injured. Emergency crews responded to widespread damage in residential areas.
In the southern port city of Odesa, nine people were killed and 23 injured. Additional casualties were reported in central Dnipro, where dozens were wounded, while one person was killed in Zaporizhzhia.
Ukraine’s air force said its air defence systems intercepted or neutralized 667 out of 703 incoming aerial targets, underscoring both the scale of the attack and the intensity of defensive operations.
Meanwhile, in Russia, regional authorities reported casualties from Ukrainian strikes. Veniamin Kondratyev said two people were killed in attacks on the Black Sea port city of Tuapse. He added that several residential buildings and schools were damaged, and drone debris fell near the port.
Russia’s Defence Ministry stated that its air defences shot down 207 Ukrainian drones overnight.
The latest escalation highlights the continued intensity of cross-border strikes as the conflict grinds on, with civilians in multiple regions bearing the brunt of the attacks.
