A 36-year-old former elementary school teacher in New Jersey, United States, has pleaded guilty to child endangerment after sexually abusing a male student over several years and giving birth to his child when he was 13.

The teacher, Laura Caron, entered the guilty plea at a court in Cape May, New Jersey, following an investigation into her relationship with the former student.

Caron, who previously worked as a fifth-grade teacher and basketball coach at Middle Township Elementary School No. 2, faces up to five years in state prison under the plea agreement. She could also lose her teaching licence, be placed on the sex offender registry and face lifetime parole supervision.

According to reports, Caron became close to the boy’s family after teaching his older sister. His parents reportedly trusted her to provide similar academic support for their son, allowing her to develop a close relationship with the family.

She allegedly began sexually abusing the boy when he was 11, with the abuse continuing for approximately four years.

Caron became pregnant while staying at the family’s home and gave birth to a daughter in 2019, when she was 28 and the boy was 13.

She reportedly continued teaching after the birth and told friends at her baby shower that the child’s father was no longer involved.

The case came to light in December 2024 after the boy’s father noticed a resemblance between Caron’s daughter and his son in a photograph. He subsequently shared the observation on Facebook, prompting the school superintendent to alert authorities.

DNA testing later established that the former student was the biological father of Caron’s daughter.

Caron was arrested in January 2025 and subsequently charged. Before reaching the plea agreement, she reportedly faced charges that could have resulted in a prison sentence of between 10 and 40 years if convicted.

The former teacher is expected to undergo an assessment at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center before sentencing. The evaluation will determine whether her conduct was repetitive or compulsive and could influence the sentence imposed.

Her sentencing has been scheduled for January 8.

Meanwhile, the former student has publicly defended Caron, expressing affection for her and reportedly asking that the charges be dropped.

In an interview with the Daily Mail in February, he said he believed he had initiated their interactions and did not want her to be imprisoned.

However, his statements do not alter the fact that he was a minor when the abuse began or the guilty plea entered by the former teacher.

He also said court restrictions had prevented him from contacting Caron and their child during the legal proceedings.

The case has drawn attention to the abuse of trust by educators and the protection of children in school and family environments.
