At least three people were killed and 21 others injured after a female suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside a restaurant in central Moscow, Russian authorities said.

The blast occurred near the Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant on Sunday after the woman was reportedly stopped by a security guard while attempting to enter the premises.

Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee said the attacker, whose identity has not yet been established, detonated the device at the entrance to the restaurant, causing multiple casualties.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the incident as “an act of terrorism” and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Emergency responders and security personnel quickly cordoned off the area as investigators began examining the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the bombing and are working to identify the attacker, as well as any individuals or groups that may have been involved in planning the assault.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of the time of filing this report. Russian security agencies said efforts were ongoing to establish the motive behind the bombing.

The incident is one of the deadliest attacks reported in Moscow in recent months and has prompted heightened security measures across parts of the Russian capital.
