Five Local Vigilantes Killed as Gunmen Attack Niger Republic Community, Abduct Official
At least five members of a local vigilante group were killed after suspected Islamic State-linked militants attacked Seno village near Ayorou in the Tillabéri region of Niger Republic.
Sources said the attack occurred around 6:00 p.m. on May 17, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen stormed the village, located about six kilometres from Ayorou, targeting traders and community security volunteers operating in the area.
Preliminary reports indicated that at least five members of local self-defence groups lost their lives while attempting to repel the attackers and protect residents during the assault.
The incident reportedly came just hours after the abduction of a local official identified as Moussa Koukou, believed to be the perimeter manager of Diomana.
According to local sources, Koukou was kidnapped at about 11:00 a.m. while travelling in a Toyota RAV4 within the area.
Security sources suspect the abduction and subsequent attack may be connected to the activities of extremist groups linked to the Islamic State operating across the volatile Tillabéri region near the borders of Mali and Burkina Faso.
As of the time of filing this report, Nigerien authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incidents, while security monitoring and operations were said to be ongoing in the affected communities.
