The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has conducted a free medical screening exercise for motoring public in Gombe State.

The beneficiaries included commercial drivers, transport union members, and motorists.

The event is part of activities to commemorate the 2026 Customer Service Week with the theme: “The Extra Mile.”

The Sector Commander, Mr Samson Kaura, said this while inspecting the one-day exercise on Thursday in Gombe.

Kaura underscored the importance of medical fitness to road safety.

He said that the exercise was designed to raise awareness on the need for road users to pay attention to their health, and ensure that they were medically fit before driving vehicles.

The commander stressed the need for road users to improve their health status through regular examinations, to enable them to stay fit for driving.

Kaura said that the corps in collaboration with stakeholders deployed medical personnel to facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise.

“Today, we are going the extra mile to ensure that we provide these medical services to our esteemed customers.

“For you to be on the road, psychologically, medically, you need to be balanced, and that is why we are here to reach out to you, and to ensure that we give these medical treatments.

“So, we have the test on BP, HIV, diabetes and eye tests, we are running them here,” he said.

Kaura said that drugs and medical counselling would also be offered to improve health and ensure safe road use.

The gesture, he said, would strengthen relations between FRSC personnel and road users.

Mr Moses Nnadi, Coordinator, Gombe State Special Marshals, lauded the initiative.

He said that the exercise is imperative in view of the cost-implication of getting oneself checked at health facilities.

Nnadi urged road users to cooperate with FRSC personnel to promote good road safety practices.

A beneficiary, Malam Hassan, said that he was certified medically fit after being screened for the eye and blood pressure.

He said that the free medical test had saved him the cost of going to the hospital.

“I know that FRSC personnel are our friends, and they mean well for us,” he said.
