The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed to the Government of Gombe to restore the monthly stipends for corps members serving in the state.

Coordinator of the scheme in the state, Mrs Regina Eke, made the appeal on Friday, during the Swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream II orientation course, in Akko Local Government Area (LGA)

According to her, restoring the stipends will improve welfare of corps members, boost their morale and strengthen their commitment to national service.

“Such support will significantly boost their morale, strengthen their commitment and enable them to contribute more effectively, to the development of Gombe,” she said.

Eke however commended the state government for constructing a permanent orientation camp for the scheme, noting that it would improve corps members’ comfort during their stay.

She expressed optimism that the ongoing orientation programme would be the last conducted at the temporary camp.

Eke then urged corps members to participate actively in camp activities, including drills, parades, leadership training, lectures, skills acquisition, sports and social activities.

She also advised them to maintain discipline, respect constituted authority and familiarise themselves with the NYSC Act and bye-laws.

The coordinator encouraged the corps members to utilise the opportunity of the orientation programme to acquire relevant skills and prepare for a successful service year.

“Take advantage of every opportunity available to develop yourselves and prepare for future success.
“These programmes are designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills and values, required to contribute meaningfully to national development,” she said.

In his remarks, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the safety and welfare of corps members.

Yahaya, represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Abdul Yusuf, said the government would continue prioritising the wellbeing of the corps members.

He noted that the government was collaborating with security agencies and other stakeholders to provide a safe and conducive environment for corps members.

The governor then urged them to embrace their postings and contribute meaningfully to the development of their host communities.

He advised them against seeking relocation without compelling reasons, noting that their services were needed across various sectors.

Yahaya assured them that the government would continue to collaborate with the management of the NYSC, employers, and other stakeholders in addressing concerns of welfare of corps members.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 1,201 corps members were sworn in during the orientation exercise.

The figure comprised 686 males and 515 females deployed to the state for the mandatory national service.
