A fresh investigation by the police has revealed how a suspected kidnapping syndicate allegedly used a hotel in the Bucknor area of Lagos as a covert operational base while planning a series of abductions across the state.

The discovery followed a failed kidnap attempt at Jakande Estate Gate, where operatives of the Lagos State Police Command engaged members of the gang in a gun battle, killing four suspects.

According to police findings, the group had been operating discreetly, checking into the hotel as ordinary guests while using the facility to coordinate attacks in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Okota and surrounding communities.

Investigators said the suspects paid for their accommodation, avoided suspicion, and blended into the environment while allegedly monitoring targets and planning operations.

Residents of the affected areas had reportedly experienced rising insecurity in recent weeks, with several accounts of armed men intercepting vehicles at night and abducting occupants. Witnesses described the attacks as highly coordinated and carried out within minutes.

Police intelligence later linked the syndicate to a planned operation scheduled for the night of May 24, with Jakande Estate Gate identified as the target location for an intended abduction of a businessman.

Security operatives from the Commissioner of Police Special Squad 1 reportedly mounted surveillance and moved in to intercept the gang during the attempted operation.

The confrontation escalated into a gunfight after the suspects opened fire on the officers. Four members of the gang were killed in the exchange, while another suspect escaped with gunshot injuries. A police inspector was also wounded and is receiving treatment.

Items recovered from the scene included a Toyota Sienna vehicle, an AK-47 rifle, another firearm, magazines, and ammunition.

Following the operation, investigators traced communications linked to the suspects to a hotel in Bucknor. A subsequent search of the premises led to the discovery of two abandoned vehicles, luggage, clothing, electronic devices, and several documents, including international passports.

Police further disclosed that two passports recovered from the hotel appeared to bear the same individual’s photograph but different identities, raising suspicions of identity manipulation. One suspect was identified as Onwukwalu Junior Ifeanyi, also known as Ifeko, who allegedly used another identity, Kouadio Yves Alexandre. Another was identified as Nzeribe Izuchukwu Victor.

The Lagos State Police Command, through its spokesperson and Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai, said preliminary investigations suggest the gang leader operates from outside Nigeria and travels in to coordinate kidnapping activities.

He added that the suspect has a history of international movement, and efforts are ongoing to track fleeing members of the syndicate and their collaborators.

Police also confirmed that ownership of recovered vehicles is being verified, while forensic analysis continues to establish the identities of the deceased suspects.

Authorities say the case highlights a growing trend of criminal groups using legitimate businesses such as hotels as cover for planning violent crimes, and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations across Lagos.
