Kenyan Mother of 3 Battles for Recovery After Routine Procedure Turns Life-Threatening
A Kenyan mother of three is on a long road to recovery after a routine medical procedure led to severe complications, leaving her fighting for her life and her family struggling with emotional and financial strain.
According to her husband, what was expected to be a standard intervention took a critical turn when her duodenum was accidentally perforated during the procedure. The complication was not immediately detected, and her condition worsened over several days before she was rushed to Nairobi Hospital in critical condition.
Doctors battled to stabilise her as infection spread, admitting her to high dependency care. Over the following two weeks, she underwent four major surgeries aimed at repairing the internal damage and stopping leakage. When those interventions proved insufficient, medics inserted multiple drains and later created a fistula to aid healing.
For six weeks, she was unable to eat or drink, enduring intense pain and uncertainty as her family held on to hope. Gradually, her condition improved, and the fistula eventually healed, marking a major turning point.
She has since been discharged but continues to face significant challenges. Physically weakened, she cannot walk unaided and requires daily nursing care for two remaining wounds. She is also undergoing therapy to rebuild strength and recover from memory lapses experienced during her illness.
The ordeal has taken a toll on her young family. Her youngest child, just two months old when the crisis began, has been cared for by relatives, while her other children have spent extended periods without their mother.
Financially, the burden has been overwhelming. The total hospital bill reached KSh 10.6 million, with insurance and well-wishers covering part of the cost. However, a balance of KSh 4.5 million remains, alongside ongoing expenses for rehabilitation and home-based care.
Despite the hardships, the family says they remain hopeful. Her husband described their journey as one of faith and endurance, appealing for continued support to help settle medical bills and aid her full recovery.
For them, the experience has become more than a medical crisis — it is a testament to resilience, community support, and the hope that she will one day regain her strength and return to caring for her children.
