Nigerian-American Daniel Umemezie Named 2026–2027 US National Youth Poet Laureate

Nigerian-American poet Daniel Umemezie has been named the 2026–2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming only the second Nigerian-American to receive the prestigious honour.

The U.S. Mission Nigeria announced Umemezie’s appointment in a social media post, describing him as the 10th poet to hold the national title and the second Nigerian-American to receive the recognition after Salome Agbaroji, who was named laureate in 2023.

“Meet Daniel Umemezie, the 2026-2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate — the 10th poet to hold this prestigious title, and the second Nigerian-American to do so, following 2023 laureate Salome Agbaroji,” the mission said.

The mission praised Umemezie’s distinctive voice, noting that his poetry explores heritage, identity and the Nigerian-American experience while reflecting the richness and complexity of his life.

His achievement represents another significant milestone for Nigerian-American representation in the U.S. literary community and highlights the growing influence of young voices in poetry and creative expression.

The National Youth Poet Laureate title recognises outstanding young poets in the United States and provides them with a platform to share their work with wider audiences.

Umemezie’s appointment has also been hailed as an example of how young people can use creativity, poetry and storytelling to inspire others, promote cultural understanding and make a meaningful impact.
