Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has been elected as a member of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) Steering Committee.
Tinubu’s election took place on Saturday during the 29th Ordinary General Assembly of OAFLAD in Addis Ababa.
Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Mrs. Fatima Bio, was elected as the new President of OAFLAD, while Angola’s First Lady, Mrs. Ana Lorenzo, was chosen as Vice President.
Tinubu will serve as one of two representatives for West Africa on the eight-member steering committee. Other elected nations include Sierra Leone, Angola, Malawi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo.
The election was held on the sidelines of the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government Summit, running from Feb. 13 to 16.
OAFLAD comprises the spouses of African heads of state and government from 24 countries, working to promote development initiatives across the continent.
In her remarks, Tinubu congratulated Bio and reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for improved access to quality education for women and girls in Africa.
Ms. Nardos Berhanu, OAFLAD Secretary-General, and outgoing President, Namibia’s First Lady Monica Geingos, also extended their congratulations to Tinubu and the newly elected members.
