The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Benue State Command, has taken delivery of 20 operational motorcycles donated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to strengthen security and emergency response across the state.
The Boxer motorcycles were formally handed over to the command on August 31, 2026, as part of efforts to enhance the Corps’ capacity to respond quickly to security challenges, particularly in hard-to-reach and high-risk communities.
Speaking during the handover, a representative of UNHCR, Arjun Jain, said the organisation considered the NSCDC a humanitarian and non-profit-oriented agency whose activities were consistent with the objectives and mandate of the UN refugee agency.
Jain, who spoke during the signing of the Agreement on Ownership and Transfer of UNHCR Assets between the NSCDC and UNHCR, urged the Corps to maximise the use of the motorcycles in strengthening first-line response to security and humanitarian emergencies in Benue.
Receiving the assets on behalf of the Benue State Commandant, CC Bitrus Alice Larai, the Deputy Commandant in charge of Administration, DCC Ajor John, commended UNHCR for its contribution towards improving the operational capacity of the Corps.
He said the motorcycles would enhance the command’s response rate to security emergencies and other operational challenges across the state.
The command also acknowledged the coordinating role of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in responding to emergencies and assured UNHCR that the donated assets would be deployed strictly for operational purposes.
According to the command, the acquisition of the motorcycles is part of its efforts to expand its administrative and operational structures in response to the changing security dynamics and the growing challenge posed by asymmetric conflicts in the state.
The commandant, however, warned personnel against the unprofessional use of the motorcycles and directed the Head of Technical Services to monitor their deployment, usage and functionality.
She further ordered that none of the motorcycles should be moved from their designated locations without prior approval.
The command disclosed that the motorcycles would be deployed to some of the state’s high-security-risk areas, including Guma, Kwande, Logo, Agatu, Apa and Otukpo Local Government Areas.
The NSCDC said the deployment was expected to improve mobility and facilitate faster intervention by personnel during security incidents and humanitarian emergencies in the affected communities.
The development underscores the growing importance of rapid-response capacity in tackling security challenges in Benue, particularly in areas where difficult terrain and inadequate mobility can hamper the timely deployment of security personnel.
