Tragedy in Kaduna: 2 Teenagers Drown as Torrential Rain Floods River

Two teenagers have drowned in a river in Askplaye community, Kaduna State, following torrential rainfall that caused flooding across parts of the state.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Suleiman Yakubu and 17-year-old Abubakar Mohammed.

The incident was confirmed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North-West Operations Office, Kaduna, although details surrounding the drowning remained sketchy as of Monday.

NEMA said the bodies of the two teenagers had yet to be recovered.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the agency said its North-West Operations Office, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other stakeholders, was assessing the impact of the flooding following about four consecutive days of torrential rainfall across parts of Kaduna metropolis.

According to NEMA, its Head of Operations, Hajia Halima Suleiman, led an assessment team to affected communities to determine the extent of the flooding and the needs of residents.

The agency said some communities experienced flash floods, which submerged roads and temporarily trapped residents in their homes.

The flooding also disrupted movement, forcing residents to exercise caution while navigating affected areas.

NEMA said Suleiman also visited the family of the late Yakubu to express condolences over the loss and offer support.

The agency assured residents that NEMA, KADSEMA and other emergency response agencies would continue to monitor the flood situation and assess the needs of affected communities to ensure an appropriate response.
