Abuja Heavy Rain: Flash Floods Trigger Major Traffic Gridlock

Parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, were flooded following a heavy downpour recorded across the city on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The Airport Road and Lugbe areas were among the locations affected by the flooding, with videos shared on social media showing motorists and commuters caught in heavy traffic as floodwaters covered parts of the roads.

The downpour reportedly disrupted vehicular movement in the affected areas, causing significant traffic congestion as motorists struggled to navigate the flooded roads.

The incident occurred barely two weeks after parts of the FCT were similarly hit by flooding following heavy rainfall.

In response to the recurring flooding, the FCT Administration, under Minister Nyesom Wike, has commenced the demolition of structures allegedly built on waterways and drainage channels across the territory.

The government said the exercise is part of measures aimed at clearing waterways and preventing further flooding in vulnerable areas.
