The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed a suspected outbreak of Marburg virus disease in Tanzania’s Kagera Region, reporting eight fatalities and one additional case under investigation.

In a statement on Tuesday, the WHO expressed concern over the potential spread of the deadly hemorrhagic virus within Tanzania and neighboring countries.

“We are aware of nine cases so far, including eight deaths,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a social media post. “We anticipate more cases as disease surveillance efforts are intensified. WHO stands ready to fully assist the Tanzanian government and affected communities.”

Tanzania’s government has not yet issued an official response to the WHO’s announcement.

The Marburg virus is a highly fatal zoonotic disease causing hemorrhagic fever. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with body fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials and surfaces, the WHO explained.

This is the second reported outbreak in the Kagera Region within recent years. In March 2023, Tanzanian health officials successfully contained an outbreak that claimed five lives.

The WHO has alerted its member states and is mobilizing resources to contain the current outbreak and prevent its further spread.
