Will Oyo Private Schools Close Friday to Demand Release of Kidnapped Teachers, Students?
Private schools across Oyo State will remain closed on Friday, June 5, as part of a coordinated solidarity action demanding the safe return of pupils and teachers recently abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
The directive was issued by the Coalition of Non-State Schools, an umbrella body comprising the Association of Private School Owners, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, the Association of Model Islamic Schools, and other private education groups in the state.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the coalition’s acting chairman, Jamiu Muhammed, and acting secretary, Mayowa Solademi, said the decision was taken in response to the recent abduction and growing concerns over the safety of learners, educators, and school communities.
According to the coalition, all affiliated private schools in the state will suspend academic activities on Friday to support calls for the immediate rescue and release of the kidnapped victims.
“All private schools across Oyo State shall be closed on Friday, June 5, 2026, in solidarity with calls for the prompt release of our kidnapped pupils and teachers,” the statement read.
The coalition also announced a statewide special prayer programme to be held on the same day, seeking divine intervention for the safe return of the victims and lasting peace and security across Oyo State and Nigeria.
Parents, guardians, school proprietors, teachers, and students have been encouraged to participate in the prayer sessions as scheduled by their respective schools.
The group further urged security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property and ensure that schools remain safe learning environments.
It expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, stressing the need for collective action in addressing the security challenges facing the state.
