A 16-year-old girl, Maryam Samuel, was found dead by hanging in Kaltungo, Gombe State, in what police suspect to be a case of suicide.
Gombe State Police Command spokesman, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the incident on Saturday, stating that the deceased was discovered hanging from a tree on Kalarin mountain on March 14, a day after she left home to fetch firewood.
“The case was reported at Kaltungo Divisional Headquarters by the village head of Kalarin around 9:00 a.m. on Friday. The body was found with no visible marks of violence,” Abdullahi said.
The corpse has been deposited at the General Hospital, Kaltungo, as police continue investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
A family source, who requested anonymity, alleged that the girl was pregnant and had been visiting her boyfriend, which led to a confrontation with her parents before the incident. However, police have yet to confirm this claim.
