8 Nigerians Arrested in Ghana for Allegedly Beating 21-Year-Old Man During Internet Fraud Initiation
Eight Nigerian nationals have been arrested in Ghana for allegedly assaulting a 21-year-old compatriot as part of an initiation process into an internet fraud operation.
The suspects were arrested at Kotokrom, a suburb of the Sunyani West Municipality in Ghana’s Bono Region, after police responded to a distress call on October 4, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Bono Regional Police Command on October 9, officers from the Regional Operations Unit arrived at the scene at about 4:30 p.m. and found the victim, identified as Godstime Umukoro, with multiple marks of assault on his body.
The eight suspects were arrested at the scene.
They were identified as Peter Mbam, 24; Godwin Moses, 26; Humble Oweifah, 18; Osas Ogbemudia, 30; Samuel Aisosa, 22; Ashile Godbess, 24; Alexander Uyuo, 30; and Patrick Romans, 25.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the alleged assault was part of an initiation process the suspects claimed to have undergone before joining the internet fraud business.
Investigators also uncovered an alleged online fraud operation involving the suspects and a man identified as Nwachukwu King Augustine, who was described as their chairman.
According to the police, Augustine allegedly brought the suspects to Ghana, where they used downloaded photographs of foreign military personnel to deceive unsuspecting victims online.
The suspects reportedly posed as military personnel deployed to the war front in Yemen and engaged their targets in conversations under that false identity before soliciting money from them.
The money allegedly obtained from the victims was subsequently paid into the account of their purported leader, the police said.
The Bono Regional Police Command commended members of the public for their swift intervention and reiterated its commitment to working with residents to combat crime in the region.
As of the time of the report, the police had not disclosed whether the eight suspects had been formally charged in court.
