Asake Explains Preference for Singing in Yoruba

Afrobeat sensation Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has revealed that he feels more at ease expressing himself in Yoruba, his native language, through his music.

During an interactive session with fans on Instagram, Asake addressed a question about his preference for singing in Yoruba. Although he is capable of singing in English, Asake emphasized that he finds greater comfort in using Yoruba in his songs.

“If you vibe with me, vibe with me in Yoruba. If not, then don’t,” Asake stated firmly, expressing his frustration with critics who question his choice.

Asake’s latest album, “Lungu Boy,” released on August 9, continues his tradition of incorporating predominantly Yoruba lyrics, following in the footsteps of his previous albums “Mr Money With The Vibes” and “Work of Art.” Despite the linguistic barrier, his music has garnered international recognition, with his hit track “Amapiano” earning a nomination for “Best African Music Performance” at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

“Lungu Boy” has been met with widespread acclaim, setting new records on Spotify Nigeria with 5.86 million streams on its opening day, surpassing the previous record held by Davido’s “Timeless.” The album features collaborations with several global stars, including Wizkid, Central Cee, Stormzy, Travis Scott, and Ludmila.

Asake is set to embark on a worldwide tour to promote “Lungu Boy,” with scheduled performances at prestigious venues such as the O2 Arena in the UK and Madison Square Garden in the United States.
