Final Year Akwa Ibom Poly Student Found Dead in Her Room
A final-year student of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Emem Okon Jimmy, has been found dead in her off-campus apartment under mysterious circumstances.
Emem, who was studying Journalism and Media Studies, reportedly passed away in her sleep on Thursday, July 17, 2025. However, her lifeless body was only discovered around 10:00 p.m. on Friday by concerned neighbours.
According to eyewitnesses, the 24-year-old was healthy the night before and had shared dinner with fellow tenants at the student lodge. The alarm was raised when she was not seen outside the next day.
“The caretaker noticed she hadn’t come out all day on Friday, which was unusual,” a neighbour recounted. “When we tried to open her door, it was locked from inside. We had to break the ceiling to gain entry.”
She was found lying face down, covered with her bedspread and holding her phone tightly. Blood reportedly oozed from her nose and had stained the mattress, suggesting a possible medical emergency.
Her elder brother was immediately contacted and arrived from Uyo to transport her remains to the mortuary.
In honour of her memory, students of the Polytechnic held a candlelight procession on Thursday, July 24. She is scheduled to be laid to rest on Saturday, July 26, in Uyo.
Speaking during the procession, Dr. Inemesit Umoren, Head of the Journalism and Media Studies Department, urged students to prioritize their health and undergo regular medical checkups.
Friends and classmates have since flooded social media with emotional tributes. One heartfelt message from her close friend UdemeseAbasi James read:
“We spoke on Thursday in school. I didn’t know it would be the last time. I’ve been replaying our conversations and your voice messages. You called me ‘Mummy,’ yet played the role of a big sister to me. Jimmy, look what you’ve done to me. You dared to leave like this?”
The sudden death of Emem Jimmy has left the campus community in shock as tributes continue to pour in, remembering her as kind-hearted, cheerful, and full of promise.
