Femi Kuti shares secret to lasting success in music: “Consistency and purpose keep me relevant”
Veteran Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti has revealed that his enduring success in the global music scene is rooted in his commitment to creating meaningful and purposeful music rather than chasing fleeting fame.
Speaking on the Afropolitan podcast, Kuti advised young artists to prioritise producing quality music that stands the test of time instead of rushing to make quick hit songs.
“When the head is not correct, nothing can be correct. I like what young artists are doing, but what will they do when they are 50?” he asked.
Reflecting on his four-decade-long career, Kuti said his consistency and authenticity have kept him relevant across generations. “I’m still touring because my fans introduce me to their children and their children’s children. You’ll see both the old and young at my concerts. Some people have followed me for 15 or 20 years and still bring my albums for me to sign,” he said.
He attributed his longevity to hard work and genuine artistry. “Consistency — that’s the key. And I have something to offer. If you’re not writing your own music and you’re just buying songs or jumping around, will you still be doing that at 40?” he asked rhetorically.
Citing music legends such as Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder, Kuti stressed the importance of constant practice and mastery. “When I pick up my sax, you’ll know I’ve been working. I composed everything. Music is like medicine. Legends like Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder are respected because they kept working and practicing,” he explained.
Kuti warned that many young artists risk fading out if they prioritise fame over substance. “Young artists rush to make hit songs, and maybe they’ll get two or three. But they don’t see the danger — the next generation will have their own stars, and then you’ll fade away,” he cautioned.
Femi Kuti, the eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, continues to perform worldwide, inspiring audiences with his energetic performances and message-driven music.
