Uber, Bolt Drivers Suspend Services in Lagos, Ogun Over Welfare Concerns

Drivers operating on ride-hailing platforms Uber and Bolt have suspended services in Lagos and Ogun State in protest over what they describe as unfavourable working conditions.

The shutdown, organised by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), saw drivers log out of the ride-hailing apps as part of a coordinated industrial action.

Union leaders said the protest was aimed at drawing attention to challenges faced by app-based drivers, including high commission charges, rising operational costs and concerns about driver welfare.

According to the union, members were directed to stay offline from the platforms during the protest period to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with existing policies of the ride-hailing companies.

AUATON said the action was also intended to push for improved earnings, fairer commission structures and better engagement between drivers and the platform operators.

The union noted that drivers have repeatedly raised concerns about declining income due to increasing fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs and platform charges.

Passengers in parts of Lagos and neighbouring Ogun State reported difficulty booking rides during the protest, as the number of available drivers on the platforms dropped significantly.

Union officials, however, said the shutdown was necessary to highlight the need for reforms that would ensure fair working conditions and sustainable income for app-based transport workers.
