The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a strategic enforcement initiative tagged “Operation Safe Kugbo” to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents along the busy Kugbo outbound corridor in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The initiative is also aimed at curbing the rising cases of road traffic crashes involving articulated vehicles along the heavily used AYA–Nyanya–Kugbo route in Abuja.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the Acting Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu.

According to him, the enforcement exercise followed the recent constitution of a high-level tactical team tasked with assessing and addressing frequent crashes along the AYA–Nyanya–Kugbo axis.

Mohammed said the operation reflects the corps’ commitment to implementing practical solutions based on its strategic assessments.

He explained that the initiative, coordinated at the sector level by the FCT Sector Commander, Felix Theman, is in line with the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR), particularly Section 223, as well as the FCT Traffic Regulations.

“The operation is designed to restrict the movement of articulated vehicles and heavy-duty trucks during peak traffic hours to reduce congestion and minimise crash risks,” he said.

Providing an update on the first day of the operation, Mohammed said the Nyanya Unit Commander led a joint enforcement team comprising personnel from the FCT Command and the Nyanya Unit Command.

The team, made up of eight officers and 22 marshals, and supported by three patrol vehicles and five motorbikes, restricted 89 articulated vehicles from operating during the designated peak periods on Wednesday, March 18.

He noted that the enforcement exercise was carried out smoothly, with full compliance recorded from motorists and transport operators.

The Corps Marshal commended drivers and transport stakeholders for their cooperation, noting that their understanding contributed to the successful and hitch-free implementation of the exercise.

Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to deploying data-driven and people-centred strategies to protect lives and property on Nigerian roads.

He also urged road users, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to continue adhering to traffic regulations, adding that sustained enforcement under Operation Safe Kugbo would remain key to ensuring safer and more efficient movement within the FCT.
