Australia Seeks Real Change in Gaza, Supports UK’s Arms Export Restrictions
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced on Tuesday that Australia is working with international partners, including the UK, to push for meaningful change in Gaza amid the ongoing crisis.
Wong reaffirmed the Australian government’s stance on arms exports to Israel, stating that only export permits for items needing repairs and returning to Australia for defense or law enforcement have been approved. This aligns with Australia’s commitment to ensuring that its exports are not used in ways that violate international law.
Earlier in September, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel after a review determined a risk of weapons being used to breach international humanitarian law. Australia has expressed support for the UK’s decision, placing it at odds with the United States, which reportedly warned Britain against the move.
Australia’s backing of the UK’s arms export restrictions signals its growing engagement in efforts to bring stability and humanitarian progress to Gaza.
