Will Jonathan Risk His Legacy With Another Presidential Bid? — Ex-Minister Duke
Former Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Edem Duke, has dismissed growing speculation about a possible return of former President Goodluck Jonathan to partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general election, describing such a move as unnecessary and risky.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Wednesday, Duke said Jonathan remains one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s democratic journey and should focus on strengthening his role as a statesman rather than re-entering electoral politics.
He expressed concern over reports linking the former president to a potential presidential bid, arguing that some political actors were attempting to leverage Jonathan’s reputation and credibility for their own interests.
According to Duke, Jonathan’s achievements as president and his growing stature across Africa have earned him a respected place in national and international affairs that extends beyond partisan politics.
He maintained that the former president understands the implications of the political conversations surrounding his name and is unlikely to jeopardise his hard-earned legacy by pursuing another term in office.
“The possibility of President Goodluck Jonathan returning to active politics is something I view with great concern,” Duke said.
“He is an iconic figure whose tenure highlighted some of the best aspects of Nigeria’s democracy. Having attained such a respected status in Nigeria and across the continent, it would be unfortunate for him to be drawn into what I consider a political lottery.”
Duke also criticised politicians promoting Jonathan’s return, saying they should focus on resolving challenges within their own political structures instead of using the former president as a political tool.
“It is unfortunate that people who have not been able to put their own house in order believe they can trade on the integrity and image of a former president for political advantage,” he said.
He added that Jonathan is fully aware of the ongoing political manoeuvres and remains focused on preserving his influence as a respected elder statesman.
“What he stands to gain as a former president is far greater than risking it all for another four years of political ambition,” Duke stated.
