The Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN) has launched a groundbreaking peace and unity initiative in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State, aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.
The launch event, held at the palace of the Etsu Agaie, Alhaji Yusuf Nuhu, showcased the foundation’s commitment to promoting inclusive development and social cohesion.
Speaking at the event, GPFN’s Country Director, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, underscored the significance of unity in building a harmonious society. “The holy books of Jews, Christians, and Muslims affirm that all human beings are from the family of Adam and Eve,” he said, emphasizing humanity’s shared origin as one family under God.
Hayab highlighted the foundation’s proactive approach to peacebuilding, focusing on early interventions to prevent crises. “We are here to seek the blessings and approval of the emir of Agaie to start our peacebuilding interventions in this local government,” he added, noting the vital role of traditional leaders in promoting peace.
The Northern Coordinator of GPFN, Sheikh Abdullahi Maraya, praised the emir of Agaie for his efforts in fostering peaceful coexistence. “Islam teaches respect for others’ beliefs,” he remarked, urging residents to verify rumors and avoid making sweeping generalizations.
In his response, the emir of Agaie, represented by Alhaji Usman Garkuwa, expressed gratitude to GPFN for selecting Agaie for its next peace initiative. He pledged inclusivity in governance, regardless of tribe or religious affiliation.
The event also celebrated cultural diversity with performances by Fulani, Yoruba, Tiv, Igbo, and Nupe groups, alongside students from local schools.
The GPFN’s intervention in Agaie follows an 18-month successful peace initiative in Lapai Local Government Area. With its mission of “One Family Under God,” GPFN continues to promote innovative, values-based peacebuilding across communities.
