A U.S. military aircraft carrying more than 100 deported Indian nationals arrived in Punjab’s Amritsar city on Wednesday, marking the first such flight since President Donald Trump took office.

According to officials, the deportees—who had been living illegally in the U.S.—were received at the airport under a “friendly” protocol set up by Punjab police. Local media reports indicate that the flight carried 104 individuals, including 25 women.

Punjab’s Minister for Non-Resident Indians (NRI) Affairs, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, explained that many of those deported had initially entered the U.S. with valid work permits, which later expired, rendering them undocumented.

The Indian Foreign Ministry has yet to issue an official statement on the deportations. However, last month, the ministry stated that India would conduct verification procedures, including confirming the nationality of each individual before accepting deportations.

President Trump previously mentioned that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him that India would cooperate in addressing the issue of illegal immigration. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also raised concerns over undocumented Indian migrants during a recent meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Washington.

With an estimated 4 million Indians living in the U.S., immigration policies remain a key issue in U.S.-India relations. Meanwhile, Trump’s administration has appointed several Indian-Americans to key government positions, reflecting the community’s growing political influence.
