The Nigerian Navy on Tuesday marked its 70th anniversary with a community outreach programme in Lagos, distributing educational materials and gifts to more than 500 children.

The event, organised by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) WEY in collaboration with the Naval Air Station Ojo and the Naval Hospital, brought together children from Navy Town and neighbouring communities in Ojo.

Speaking at the programme, Commodore Mohammed Alhassan, Commander, NNS WEY, said the initiative was carried out under the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, as part of activities to commemorate the Navy’s milestone anniversary.

Alhassan noted that the outreach also coincided with the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, describing it as part of the Navy’s broader commitment to child welfare and community development.

He urged the children to remain focused on their education, obey parents and teachers, and speak up when faced with challenges.

“The future of Nigeria lies in these young ones. The package here today may not be too big, but it is a sign that we recognise your importance to society,” he said.

He further encouraged them to remain dedicated to their studies in order to secure a brighter future.

Also speaking, Commodore Raphael Ekuma, Commander of the Naval Air Station, Ojo, said the programme formed part of the Navy’s community relations activities lined up for its 70th anniversary celebration.

Ekuma explained that the outreach was designed to align with Children’s Day festivities while strengthening the relationship between the Navy and its host communities.

He added that the initiative was one of several programmes scheduled for the anniversary celebrations.

The event featured health talks, interactive sessions, and the distribution of educational materials and gifts to participating children.
