Russia on Monday summoned Germany’s ambassador to Moscow, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, in a move that signals fresh diplomatic strain between the two countries.
The envoy was called to the Russian Foreign Ministry amid allegations of contacts between German politicians and terrorist organisations, according to his spokeswoman. However, specific details surrounding the accusations were not disclosed.
“I will of cause comply with the summons. I consider it unlikely that the Russian side will be able to substantiate its allegations,” Lambsdorff said in a statement relayed by his spokeswoman ahead of the meeting.
The development adds another layer of uncertainty to already tense relations, as observers await further clarification from Russian authorities following the ambassador’s appearance at the ministry.
More information is expected to emerge after the meeting.
