Tragedy in Kano as Man Dies While Recovering Phone from Abandoned Well

A 45-year-old man, Yusuf Usman, has died after falling into an abandoned well while attempting to recover his mobile phone in Kwa Town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service, which said its Emergency Response Unit received a distress call at about 11:13 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to the spokesperson of the service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, firefighters were immediately dispatched from the state headquarters to the scene upon receiving the alert.

“Upon arrival, our rescue team found the victim trapped inside the well, which had been converted into a refuse pit. He was successfully rescued unconscious but was later confirmed dead, reportedly due to oxygen depletion and excessive heat inside the pit,” Abdullahi stated.

The agency said the body of the deceased had been handed over to the Ward Head of Kwa Town, Alhaji Muktar, for burial arrangements.

The Director of the Kano State Fire Service urged residents to ensure that wells are properly covered and that abandoned ones are filled to prevent similar tragedies.

He also called on community leaders and parents to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to safeguard their environment and prevent avoidable deaths.
