US Sanctions Iranian, Russian Entities for Election Interference

0 1

The United States announced sanctions on Tuesday targeting entities in Iran and Russia for alleged attempts to interfere in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

The U.S. Treasury Department identified the sanctioned entities as a subsidiary of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and a Russian organization linked to the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). These groups were accused of conducting operations aimed at inciting socio-political divisions and influencing American voters.

“Iran and Russia have sought to undermine our election processes and institutions through disinformation campaigns designed to divide Americans,” said Bradley T. Smith, Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the Treasury Department.

Smith emphasized the U.S. commitment to safeguarding its democracy, stating, “The United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who attempt to disrupt our democratic processes.”

The sanctions are part of broader efforts to address foreign interference in U.S. elections and reaffirm the nation’s stance against external threats to its democratic integrity.
