The Kremlin has expressed strong support for planned direct and indirect talks between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program, describing them as a positive step toward reducing tensions.
Speaking during a press briefing, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized Russia’s preference for diplomacy and peaceful dialogue.
“We are aware that certain contacts, both direct and indirect, are planned in Oman. This is a welcome development, as it could lead to de-escalation around Iran,” Peskov told reporters.
Iranian state media reported that the US–Iran discussions are scheduled to take place in Oman on April 12.
While former US President Donald Trump had claimed that the two countries were preparing for direct talks, Iran’s foreign minister clarified that any discussions would be indirect and conducted through mediators.
Trump has previously expressed willingness to strike a new nuclear deal with Iran but has also warned of possible military action if diplomacy fails.
Since launching its military operation in Ukraine in 2022, Russia has expanded its cooperation with Iran, including the reported use of Iranian-made drones in attacks on Ukrainian targets.
Russia has also positioned itself as a potential mediator between Washington and Tehran, underscoring its broader strategic ties in the Middle East.
