The African Film Festival (TAFF) has celebrated its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of promoting African cinema, recognizing excellence in filmmaking, and offering a global stage for African stories.

At the milestone event, founder and director Engr. Kelechi Eke, also known as Ichie Ihemba, reflected on the festival’s humble beginnings and bold vision.

“The journey began over a decade ago with a dream to establish the biggest African Film Festival in the diaspora,” Eke said during his speech. “Some said it wouldn’t be possible, but I smiled with focus and stayed on course by God’s grace.”

Since its inception, TAFF has grown into an internationally respected platform. Several films that premiered at the festival have gone on to represent their countries in the International Feature Film category at the Oscars, showcasing TAFF’s role in elevating African cinema globally.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, in an official letter of recognition, commended TAFF’s impact on cultural awareness and diversity through storytelling. “The African Film Festival has become a staple in Texas that inspires filmmakers of African descent, teaches African culture, and fosters diversity through motion pictures,” he stated.

U.S. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett also congratulated TAFF and praised Eke’s leadership. “It is evident that Kelechi leads TAFF with both passion and a purpose-driven, community-focused mindset. I thank you for your selflessness and commitment to elevating African stories on the global stage,” she said.

The festival continues to provide mentorship opportunities and promote inclusion through film, solidifying its place as a vital cultural institution in the diaspora.
