Islamic Militant Group Seizes Military Barracks in Mali’s Kayes Region

The Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), an Islamic armed group, has captured the Kayes military barracks in Mali, further intensifying violence and instability in the region.

This development was revealed by counterterrorism expert Zagazola Makama via a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday. Makama identified JNIM as a major militant organization in the Sahel, responsible for numerous attacks on both military and civilian targets over recent years.

The escalating conflict has prompted the High Islamic Council of Mali, under the leadership of Cherif Ousmane Madani Haidara and General Yamoussa Camara, to call for dialogue with all armed groups in the country. This initiative seeks to curb the rising violence and restore stability in Mali, where dissatisfaction is growing among both military personnel and civilians.

Makama highlighted that JNIM’s involvement in the illicit logging economy has contributed to deforestation and increased instability in the region, complicating efforts to resolve the conflict. While the success of the High Islamic Council’s dialogue initiative remains uncertain, it marks a critical step towards addressing the deepening crisis in Mali.
