UN human rights experts are demanding accountability and an impartial, thorough investigation into the Epstein files, which they argue expose systemic crimes against women and girls. In a statement, the experts raised concerns that flawed disclosures surrounding the files undermine efforts to hold perpetrators accountable.

The files, which have revealed disturbing evidence of widespread sexual abuse, trafficking, and exploitation, suggest the operation may have involved a global criminal network. The experts pointed to the severity of the alleged crimes, which could amount to sexual slavery, reproductive violence, enforced disappearance, and torture, among other violations under international law.

“Such atrocities could meet the legal threshold for crimes against humanity,” the experts stated. They emphasized the transnational scope of the crimes and the chilling level of impunity that appears to have protected powerful individuals.

The experts praised the bravery of victims seeking justice, often at great personal cost, and highlighted the obligation of states to prevent and address violence against women and girls. They stressed the need for a comprehensive investigation into the Epstein files, including an inquiry into how such acts were able to continue for so long.

In addition, the experts criticized the mishandling of sensitive victim information during the file’s release, warning that the exposure of private details could lead to further harm, including retaliation and stigmatization. They called for stronger safeguards and victim-centered procedures in future disclosures.

While applauding the actions of some governments investigating those implicated, the experts made it clear that resignations of accused individuals are insufficient. They underscored that criminal accountability is essential to address the scale of the alleged crimes.

Epstein, who died in a New York jail in August 2019, was connected to a vast network of influential individuals. Despite his death, the release of over three million pages of material, along with thousands of videos and images, has sparked renewed calls for justice. The experts reiterated their stance: “No one is too powerful or wealthy to be above the law.”
