President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) with immediate effect.

Egbetokun stepped down citing “pressing family considerations,” according to a State House press release signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Tinubu praised Egbetokun for his decades of distinguished service and leadership in strengthening the nation’s security.

Egbetokun became the 22nd IGP in June 2023, with his appointment confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council in October 2023. Although he was due to retire at age 60 in September 2024, his tenure was extended under the amended Police Act, originally set to conclude in June 2027.

Tunji Disu, previously an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, was appointed acting IGP “in view of the current security challenges confronting the nation,” the release said. President Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s operational experience and leadership capacity to provide steady direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period.

In line with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu is expected to convene the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s formal appointment, which will then be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation as substantive IGP. The President reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity, and ensuring a professional, accountable, and well-equipped police force.
