App-based drivers on Bolt platform lament poor working conditions

App-based drivers in Lagos have lamented what they describe as poor working conditions and unsustainable fares on the Bolt ride-hailing platform.

The drivers, under the umbrella of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), said rising fuel prices, high vehicle maintenance costs and increasing operational expenses had made earning a decent income difficult.

The Public Relations Officer of AUATON, Mr Steven Iwindoye, said in a press statement on Friday, that in spite of the rising cost of operations, fares offered to drivers through the platform remained unsustainable.

Iwindoye said that after deductions for platform commissions and operational costs, many drivers were left with very little income, in spite of working long hours daily.

“This situation is not only unfair, but also threatens the livelihood and dignity of thousands of hardworking drivers who depend on this work to support their families,” he said.

Iwindoye said that beyond economic challenges, the transporters also faced safety concerns, unfair account deactivations and policies introduced without adequate consultation with the drivers’ community.

He noted that drivers had attended several meetings and discussions in the past with the expectation that meaningful solutions would emerge.

“However, many of such engagements have not resulted in practical improvements for drivers.

“At this critical moment, drivers are demanding real reforms, fair pricing structures, transparent policies and stronger protection for those who power the platform,” the AUATON spokesman said.

He called for unity among drivers and appealed for caution regarding a proposed roundtable/meeting, until there was clear evidence that such an engagement would lead to genuine solutions.

“The voice of drivers must not be ignored, and their concerns must be treated with the seriousness they deserve,” Iwindoye said.
